Defence Procurement Conference

Inaugural Conference Highlights Opportunities for UK Manufacturing SMEs
One of the most interesting discussions at this year’s inaugural Defence Procurement Conference focused on the role SMEs can play within the future defence supply chain and the importance of earlier engagement between manufacturers, prime contractors and procurement teams.
The conference helps connect UK SMEs with defence manufacturers, procurement teams and government representatives.
Several themes resonated strongly with UK manufacturing businesses. These included strengthening sovereign capability, improving visibility of SME expertise, building more resilient domestic supply chains and creating clearer pathways for small and medium-sized manufacturers to participate in defence programmes.
A key message throughout the discussion was that many SMEs already possess the technical capability, specialist knowledge and manufacturing flexibility required to support defence projects. Greater collaboration is often needed to ensure those capabilities are recognised and utilised effectively.
Challenges Facing SMEs in Defence Supply Chains
The panel speakers, including Amerie Bailey of Babcock International Group and Neil Jackson of BAE Systems, discussed some of the challenges SMEs face when entering defence supply chains. These included accreditation requirements, contractual obligations and the need for greater visibility of future demand.
Earlier engagement helps manufacturers invest with greater confidence and supports supply chain resilience.

The Importance of Specialist Manufacturing Capability
For Harltex, the discussions were particularly relevant. As a UK manufacturer of bespoke rubber seals, gaskets, mouldings, extrusions and bonded components, we regularly support customers operating in demanding and highly regulated environments.
Our expertise in material selection and component design helps customers solve demanding engineering challenges.
Defence applications demand reliable sealing and component performance in harsh environments. The ability to develop bespoke profiles, moulded components and engineered sealing solutions remains an important capability within specialist UK manufacturing.
Many of the themes discussed around quality, technical capability, responsiveness and supply chain resilience align closely with the strengths that specialist manufacturers bring to the market.
Supporting Sovereign Capability Through UK Manufacturing
The conference provided a positive insight into the work being undertaken to increase SME participation across the defence sector and strengthen collaboration between organisations of all sizes.
The conference demonstrated a clear commitment to strengthening UK manufacturing capability and resilience.
UK manufacturers continue to play an important role in supporting defence capability through specialist engineering, component manufacture, technical expertise and supply chain resilience.
Harltex can support defence programmes through bespoke seals, gaskets, mouldings, extrusions and bonded components.

Harltex reflects on the Defence Procurement Conference and the growing role of UK SMEs in supporting defence supply chains through specialist sealing, extrusion and moulding expertise.
Extruded Rubber vs Moulded Rubber Components
When designing a rubber component, selecting the correct manufacturing process is one of the earliest and most important engineering decisions. Rubber extrusion and rubber moulding are both widely used across many industrial sectors.
How Material Choice Affects Rubber Extrusion Tolerances
In precision rubber extrusion, maintaining tight rubber extrusion tolerances depends heavily on material selection. Rubber extrusion tolerances refer to the allowable dimensional variation in an extruded rubber profile during manufacture.
